Inviting line managers

For HR administrators

A line manager has narrower access than an HR administrator: they see only their team. The invitation flow is the same as for an admin, with one extra step — assigning the team they manage.

Where to do it

/{slug}/app/settings/team → Invite → choose role Line Manager → enter name and email. A second field appears: Team scope — a multi-select of the people who report to this manager.

If the people they manage are not yet in the workspace, you have two options:

  • Invite them first as employees (next page) and come back to assign the line manager.
  • Invite the line manager now without scope, and edit their team from their user record in Settings once their reports exist.

The second option is fine for early setup; the line manager simply sees an empty team view until you assign someone.

What the line manager sees

After accepting the invitation, the line manager lands on the workspace home dashboard at /{slug}/app. The surface looks similar to an HR administrator's view, with three differences:

  • No Settings entry in the sidebar.
  • People list is filtered to the people on their team.
  • Hire dashboard shows only roles where the team scope owns the requisition; opening a role they do not own routes them to a read-only view.
  • Develop can assign assessments only to their team. The library itself is fully visible.
  • Grow can co-edit growth plans of their team only. Reading other plans is not permitted.

What the line manager cannot do

  • Change a person's role from Employee to Line Manager (or vice versa).
  • Edit the competency taxonomy, hiring email templates, auto-advance threshold, or workspace settings.
  • See assessments or growth plans for people outside their team.
  • Invite anyone to the workspace.

Editing team scope after the fact

From /{slug}/app/settings/team, click on the line manager's row. The detail panel includes a Manages list with add/remove buttons. Adding a person here grants the manager visibility of that person's full record from the next page load. Removing revokes it.

Next

With administrators and managers in, the largest invitation cohort is employees. The next page covers inviting one or many.
