When you assign an assessment, the wizard offers an optional AI step that generates alternative question scenarios for that assignment. The original items are never modified — variants are stored separately in your workspace and drawn at random each time a new attempt is created.
What are question variants?
A variant is an alternate wording of an assessment question that measures the same competency at the same difficulty using a different scenario. The scoring payload is always re-derived from the original item and preserved exactly — the correct answer for MCQ, the behavioral weights or per-option score for SJT, the trait for forced-choice, the score deltas for simulations, the ideal rank for ranking items, and the dimension/reverse-scoring for Likert statements. A candidate's score on a variant is therefore directly comparable to their score on the original.
Variants exist per workspace. A variant generated for your workspace is never visible to other organizations.
When the AI step appears
The AI step appears in the assignment wizard whenever the selected template has at least one variant-eligible question. Eligibility now covers every item type that carries a structured scoring payload: multiple-choice (keyed or index-scored), situational judgment (weighted or scored), Likert statements, forced-choice, ranking, and branching simulations. The only items skipped are those with no questions to rewrite (for example externally-rendered cognitive batteries).
How many questions are varied
You don't choose a percentage. The platform always varies a fixed share — about half — of the template's eligible questions, selected at random, and generates one new scenario per selected item. This keeps each assignment balanced between original and AI-generated wordings without an extra decision for the admin.
Save vs Review
Two modes are available:
- Save & use. The platform generates variants and saves them to your workspace's pool immediately. The current assignment (and all future ones for the same template) can randomly draw from the new pool.
- Review first. The platform generates variant drafts and shows them to you before saving, in a two-column view: the original question on the left and the corresponding generated new question on the right, each with its answer options (the correct answer is marked for multiple-choice items). You can read each pairing, discard any variant you are not satisfied with, or press Regenerate to draw a fresh set. The approved variants are saved when you submit the assignment.
In both modes, the generation happens synchronously while the wizard processes the assignment — you do not need to wait elsewhere.
How re-assignment uses variants
Each time a new assessment attempt is created for a template (whether on first assignment or re-assignment), the platform independently draws one form per question from the pool { original } ∪ { saved variants }. Each question can therefore show either its original wording or any of its saved variants — independently and at random.
This means two people assigned the same template on the same day may see different question wordings. The scoring is identical regardless of which form is shown.
Eligibility
A question is variant-eligible when the platform can recognize its scoring payload and re-attach it unchanged to the rewritten text:
- Multiple choice — keyed correct answer, or a single correct option scored by position
- Situational judgment — per-option behavioral weights, or a per-option effectiveness score
- Likert statement — the statement is rewritten; its dimension and reverse-scoring flag are preserved
- Forced choice — each statement keeps the personality trait it maps to
- Ranking — each option keeps its ideal rank
- Simulation — each response keeps its score delta and branch target
The AI step only appears for templates that have at least one rewritable question. Templates with no rewritable questions show a notice instead of the controls, and the assignment can still be created normally without any AI variants.
